Lizzy McAlpine - Older Review

On her third-studio album Lizzy McAlpine provides raw and honest emotions on

indie-folk instrumentals, creating an great but heartbreaking experience.

"Older" profits from having no features, since that is putting McAlpine at the center

of the attention, giving her enough room to show off raw emotions and her great

capabilities as a singer.

With "Older", we can see a clear improvement in song-writing, as the songs sound

more personal and authentic. The emotions are immediately felt and it's easy to

fall into Lizzy's world and understand her thoughts.

Experiencing the feeling of love and combining it with the lack of experience

then being young, all resulting in the question of what it really means is at the

center of topics, and Lizzy manages to dive deep in the topic with pure honesty.

The vulnerability stands out more than ever and Lizzy's great vocals manage to

capture it perfectly. Vocally she has improved, finding almost with every song

great melodies and delivering a smooth yet raw delivery. Mixed with the authentic

song-writing about love, youth and pop-cliches she catches an relatable vibe.

The production, which on her past projects often felt a bit too much, fits on "Older"

exactly right for Lizzy's vocals. With soft drums and pianos, and a nice mix of

classic acoustic guitars "Older" creates an soft atmosphere, inviting to feel

comfortable with exploring the wide range of emotions presented. The addition of

strings and vocal harmonies in some tracks serve nice touches that adds elegance

to her already delicate and honest songwriting.

While diving through the soft atmosphere throughout the album, it eventually comes

across some weaker parts. Songs like "Movie Star" or "Staying" aren't bad, but yet

miss the special thing. Those songs feel not complete and disappoint through their

short running time. Same goes for the first track of the album "The Elevator", which

makes you feel like Lizzy could have done more with it. Apart that, there isn't much

to criticize about Lizzy McAlpine's best project yet.

She delivered amazing vocal performances and the instrumentals manage to

support her throughout the album, creating an nice atmosphere in wich Lizzy is able

to fully embrace her emotions, showing off large improvement in her song-writing.

She managed to bring the intimate feeling necessary for such album, and if she

continues to improve in that pace we will soon look on more great albums to come.
